Introduction

With the uncertainty of the availability of quality health care and lack of consistent access to mainstream doctors and hospitals continuing to loom in Americas future, it is necessary, when practical, to take care of oneself. Long lines, uncertain payment information, and even quality of care is now suspect as doctors retire to avoid the possible health care changes as a result of Obamacare.
There are health care devices that are available that would baffle
most doctors as to their availability and effectiveness. This is not to take a shot at doctors, who do the best they can given their
circumstances. Who is best to determine your own health care needs but you yourself?. This implies a big IF…that you are trying to be informed, to be reading everything you can and to apply it you your own unique situation. And most importantly, to understand that you are the master of your own fate, the final say as to what you will accept and believe with regards to your own body. That is a big step for a lot of people..realizing that everything you put in your body, with regards to not only food and drink, but every drug imaginable, whether prescription or otherwise. Too many of us, as Americans, accept the doctors word for what decisions should be made with regards to our own health. We pacifly accept his/her decision without regard to things like side effects, long term effects and cost. With or without the (as I write this) looming possibility of Obama care…enough is enough…It is about time that we Americans took our health care “by the horns” and made our own decisions. If I have learned anything over the past 50 plus year of my life, it is that the average “expert” is rarely more intelligent than the average Joe, and God forbid that we should hang our hat on everything he or she says. I can say one thing without regret or doubt, and that is that if you have a doctor/practitioner who show a lack of propensity to work with you, to listen to you and to
“work with you”, it is time to move on. It may come a time when we as citizens will have to depend on black market, out of country, fly by night ways of attaining our proper health care, but as of yet (2012 as I write this) we are far from it. It is true that we have the best health care system in the world…it may not last for long…But when has it ever been an option for those of us that have unbrittled access to the internet and a preponderance of available books and informational resources to rely on the so called “expert” with his/her fancy..pansy degree on the wall to dictate perhaps the most important decisions we can make!!! I don’t have all the answers, believe me!…But if a product says it can help alleviate pain, increase vitamin d levels, use certain equipment that we can by off the internet that the “health care professional” doesn’t profit from, shouldn’t we begin to wonder about ulterior “$” motives….My wife has cancer. I don’t know why or how, as she is a petite Japanese woman who, for most of her life, has eaten better and more nutrionally than her white American husband…but because she is beholden to the “expert” (with the profit motive, don’t forget) the most pivotal decisions that she can make at the most important time of her life are almost taken out of her hands and given to the “experts”. I believe this…that God has given plenty of gifted people the same “vision” that quietly the rest of us have with regards to life, and perhaps it is time that we decided that rather than spending $100 of our money to the doctor to tell us what we already knew, that maybe we’d be better off taking that $100
and spending it on a health care device that we are free to purchase
that, in the long run, we will be better off, not only in the short
run, but when this particular ailment crops up again we have the tools to fight it without the humiliation of the doctor visit…as my wife would say ” Gambade” (Good luck)…and God Bless….

Light Therapy Devices

Your body produces vitamin d….uv rays provided by ultraviolet lamps…this collection of artificial lamps have been constructed to produce rays similar to sunlight….it is a well known fact that acquiring vitamin d via sunlight exposure or supplements has a variety of health benefits.  Perhaps most importantly during the winter, lack of sun exposure can cause a condition called S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder)

Researchers agree that the lack of sunlight in the fall and winter causes the effects of Winter Blues. Without sunlight, the brain doesn’t produce enough serotonin, which results in the symptoms of Winter Blues.

The NIH has demonstrated that specialized bright light (a large field of 10,000 lux intensity) to be the most effective means of reversing the effects of this winter blues. Light therapy produces serotonin in the brain, and researchers believe low serotonin levels contribute to winter blues. Since this discovery, scientists have successfully used bright light to treat winter blues as well as other mood & energy problems with light therapy.

Light also suppresses the hibernation hormone melatonin. This is important, because melatonin forces us to pull back, conserve and sleep. Melatonin secretion is necessary during the night, but daytime melatonin can be harmful. By suppressing melatonin during the daytime, our activity cycle is extended, and we actually sleep better at night.

There are various categories of light therapy devices that have different applications.  The first and most expensive, are the Vitamin D lamps that advertise a spectrum of light that mimicks the sun and actually promotes vitamin d production from the exposed skin.  Strict time limitations based on your body skin type are recommended, and eye protection is recommended.  This category is best represented by the serti lamp (see table below)

Secondly, there are sunlight desk lamps that actually are used for reading and/or studying.  Though they do not mention vitamin d output or effect, they are for the more casual user who’d like a reading lamp that emits some uv rays and thus help with the winter blues.  This would be represented by the sunlight desk lamp or the verlix happy lamp.

Thirdly there are the lights that deal directly with winter blues, meant to be used while sitting and reading but not as a reading light.  They shine towards you and is described by the manufacturer as “therapy light”, naturally boosting your mood and energy level and to fight winter blues in as little as 15 minutes a day.

Fourth, there are the wake up lights, lights that mimic the rising of the sun that assist you in getting out of bed in the morning

It is important to examine the various types of synthetic light available when choosing the appropriate light therapy device. Most importantly is the difference between red and blue light and their specific application with regards to ailments. The first kind of light to consider is red light. Super Pulsed Infrared Laser Radiation (re light) penetrates 10-13 cm (4-5 inches) deep and has strong stimulating effects on blood circulation, membranes and intracellular metabolism. Using photochemical processes, laser light (red light) inserts bio photons into damaged cells. The cells begin to produce energy (ATP), which improves their function, assists their division, strengthens the body’s immune system, and causes the secretion of various hormones. The tissues are healed, and pain disappears. If damaged cells have died, the bio photons help the division of neighbouring cells, generating new tissues, and thus bring about healing.

Infrared therapy (red light) is a well recognised, medically proven method of pain relief, through heat and warmth applied to a particular area of the body to effectively relieve pain and increase the blood flow to the affected area, to improve oxygenation and energise damaged cells. It has a powerful tonic effect on the central nervous system.

Continuous incoherent infrared radiation (red light) penetrates shallower tissue depth and has an overall broader spectrum as compared to laser radiation. Red light penetrates more shallow tissue depth and has a beneficial anti-inflammatory effect.

Therapeutic red light has anti inflammation and psychotherapeutic effects, as well as pain relief, improved blood circulation, anti-oedema and marked therapeutic effects on joints with the abundant areolar tissue.
The second light to consider is blue light. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that generally occurs each year during fall and winter. A light therapy box that administers blue light is a proven seasonal affective disorder treatment. Light box therapy may be effective on its own. Or, light therapy (blue light) may be most effective when it’s combined with another seasonal affective disorder treatment such as an antidepressant medication or psychological counseling (psychotherapy). Light therapy boxes for seasonal affective disorder treatment are also known as light boxes, bright light therapy boxes and phototherapy boxes.

All light boxes for seasonal affective disorder treatment are designed do the same thing, but one may work better for you than another. So, find out your options before you buy one — and make sure you’re getting the light therapy box that best suits your needs.

Sperti D/UV-F

Introduction

This Sperti lamp is by far the most intense application for artificial sun exposure available on this site.  It is advertised as being able to help the body in creating vitamin d (a wonderful feature of our bodies’ skin that many people are unaware of).  This lamp is also advertised as being able to suppress our bodies ability to make melatonin during the daytime, thus aiding our ability to sleep at night.
About the Importance of Vitamin D
There are numerous Vitamin D benefits for your skin and overall health. Unfortunately, unlike other vitamins such as vitamin c or vitamin e, vitamin d is often overlooked despite its importance in dealing with skin care problems such as psoriasis.
Vitamin d is a fat-soluble vitamin and a powerful antioxidant and anti-carcinogen. It exists in several forms. Calciferol is the most active form of the vitamin. Once produced or ingested, the liver and kidneys act on the vitamin d to convert it into an active form that the body can use.
Why is vitamin d important for good health?
There are several vitamin d benefits for your body. It is essential for:

the formation of healthy and strong teeth, bones, and nails
healthy eyes
the proper absorption of calcium by the body and the regulation of calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood
enhancing the absorption of vitamin a and vitamin c and other important elements
proper neuromuscular function
preventing osteoporosis (because it aids in calcium absorption), depression or schizophrenia, prostate cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer
helping to treat conditions such as diabetes and obesity
possibly preventing the onset of multiple sclerosis
maintaining a healthy immune system

Features
This lamp has many very convenient features.  It offers a 5 minute automatic timer which shuts off when the exposure regime is completed.  It has an emergency on/off switch that terminates the operation instantly.  Most importantly, perhaps, is that it has the backing of renowned researcher Dr Holick who has written several books about vitamin d and highly recommends it.

Reviews

Users claim that it is the only lamp which enables vitamin d levels to increase in a short amount of time.  It is assumed that this individual has been doing blood work that measures his/her vitamin d levels (very easy to do btw).  (As to why vitamin D is so important, seem my upcoming ebook about this subject which I am very passionate about).

It is important to remember, that, given the intensity of the exposure that this lamp provides, it is necessary to wear protective goggles.

If you live in a northern climate with limited sun exposure in the winter and are prone to the winter blues this by far the most powerful application of artificial sun exposure to apply to your needs

About Vitamin D Deficiency

Vitamin D is essential for the development and maintenance of healthy bones.  Early in life, Vitamin D is necessary for bone development and growth.  Later in life, Vitamin D is necessary for bone maintenance.

Vitamin D is normally made in our skin or ingested in the foods we eat. In our skin Vitamin D is made by the photoconversion of 7-Dehydrocholesterol (a provitamin) to Previtamin D3 Previtamin D3 undergoes thermal isomerization to Vitamin D3 which is picked up by serum proteins and carried first to the liver where it undergoes a hydroxylation to 25-hydroxy Vitamin D and then 25-Hydroxy Vitamin D is carried to the kidneys where a second hydroxylation occurs which makes the active form of the vitamin 1,25 calciferol.

When we ingest foods containing Vitamin D3,  like certain fish oils, or milks or cereals fortified with Vitamin  D3, the D3 is transported through the gut and carried by proteins for the necessary hydroxylations by the liver and kidneys(ref.)  There are several disturbing reports that some foods purported to contain Vitamin D; in fact, do not.

Vitamin D is stored in the body fat ant the major circulating form of vitamin D, 25 (OH)D has a circulating half life of approximately 2-3 weeks.  Both of these in combination can help maintain a person’s vitamin D status in the normal range throughout the winter if they obtain enough vitamin D during the spring, summer and fall from sun exposure.  However, it should be appreciated that body fat can sequester vitamin D, and that we and others have shown that obese people are more prone to vitamin D deficiency because of the irreversible sequestration of vitamin D in the body fat.  It also should be recognized that you would need to raise your blood levels of 25 (OH)D into the 100-150 nmol/L (40-60 ng/ml) range by the end of the summer in order to store enough vitamin D in your body fat and have enough 25 (OH)D in the circulation to sustain you throughout the winter.  Since most children and adults never reach this blood level, it is necessary for them to increase their dietary intake of vitamin D and to take a vitamin D supplement throughout the winter to maintain their 25 (OH)D levels above 75/nmol/L which most experts agree is a healthy preferred level.

It is well documented that increase in sensible sun exposure and or vitamin D intake improves overall health and well being.  Exposure to ultraviolet B radiation or increasing intake of Vitamin D maximizes bone health in children; helps prevent osteoporosis in adults; decreases risk of common autoimmune diseases including multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease and type 1 diabetes; reduces risk of serious deadly cancers including cancers of the colon, breast, prostate, ovary, esophagus and others; and decreases risk of cardiovascular heart disease.  In addition, it is well documented that exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation was an effective method of treating patients with tuberculosis.  Recent revelations have documented that it is necessary to increase blood levels of vitamin D either from solar ultraviolet irradiation, artificial ultraviolet irradiation or increasing vitamin D intake for enhancing the immune system to destroy the bacterium that causes tuberculosis.  Thus, sensible exposure to ultraviolet B radiation from sun or lamps is an effective method of maintaining adequate vitamin D levels to sustain health throughout life.

DPL Therapy Device

Introduction
DPL, an acronym for “Deep Penetrating Light” represents a new breed of light therapy in that its main feature is its ability to relieve pain. Other units emphasized mood enhancement, skin care or vitamin d exposure. Although this company does have a skin care application, its main feature is its ability to relieve muscle and joint aches, most particularly for the pain and stiffness associated with arthritis.

Review
Users tend to like the reparative tissue feature, claiming that it has helped diminish wrinkles and for help with dark spots. It is emphasized that one must be consistent with its use, as effects of therapy sessions tend to accumulate if applied in succession. There are some, however, that claimed their freckles go worse.
Users also rave about the ability of the unit to alleviate chronic conditions involving tendons and for post-operative knee surgery. People also like the size of the unit which allows for a more complete coverage of the face and neck.
Packaging problems tended to be the number one complaint, as people had a difficult time unwrapping the hard plastic used. People also tended to complain about the stand, that it was often unnecessary or impractical for their use.

DPL Deep Penetrating Light Therapy

More on DPL Therapy

Quite amazingly, the DPL therapy technology has its roots in NASA.  LED technology developed by NASA for plant growth experimentation indicated that this technology could be effective in promoting human tissue growth and wound healing.   LEDs do not produce significant heat and were selected for their plant growth experiments in space.  After the success of this application of LEDs, NASA looked to them for helping astronauts heal from injuries.  While in space, astronauts are subject to muscle and bone atrophy.  Also, injures that happen in space will tend not to heal until the astronaut returns to Earth.  NASA found that infrared light activates color sensitive chemicals within the cells.  NASA found the most effective wavelengths of light to be 680, 730, and 880 nm, and that these wavelengths improve wound healing.  Also, DNA synthesis in muscle cells quintupled with a single application of light at these wavelengths.  Following the successful testing by NASA, other organizations successfully tested LED technology for healing, pain relief, and skin therapy.  The DPL system was classified as a Class II Medical Device and cleared for over the counter use.
The DPL is made to NASA specifications: 4 joules per square cm and wavelengths of 660  nm & 880 nm.  As far as I know, it is the only home unit on the market made to these specs.
The DPL Therapy System has a total of 154 Infrared LEDs (880 nm wavelength) and 20 Red LEDs (660 nm wavelength).  These are the same wavelengths that were found effective through the NASA experimentation.
Users enjoy the easy to follow instructions provided by the manufacturer.  It is an easy device to use.  Read some more reviews with specific applications as provided below:

Using the DPL for Acne Skin Care
This lady  is in her early twenties and has had moderate acne for the past ten years or so.  She was interested in trying the DPL system out to prevent new outbreaks and to help heal scaring from previous acne.  Following the directions, she used the DPL for one cycle (17 minutes) once per day, five days a week.  “There was  a little bit of warmth, which felt kind of nice.  I actually thought it was pretty relaxing and after the 2nd or 3rd time I started listening to my iPod while using it as kind of a mid-day break.”  For results, she found that “It may have been my imagination, but I thought that I started to see results after a few days.  After a few weeks, I definitely had less new acne and at five weeks my sister mentioned that the old scarring was much less noticeable.”

Using the DPL for a Sore Knee
This man has had knee issues for years.  In the past he has used hot and cold therapy, but had the best success in minimizing pain by using a magnetic knee brace.  Shortly after we received the DPL unit, Dave had a flare-up in his knee.  He used the Velcro straps to position the panels on either side of his knee.  Dave said that the DPL System provided “fairly quick relief, similar to putting a heating pad on, but more comfortable.”  He reported a tingling feeling on the surface of the skin and relief of pain in the joint.  He’s used it a few more times over the past several weeks with similar results.

Using the DPL for a Sore Back
With the weather warming, this individual overdid it a little when planting new grass in the front yard.  That evening she put the DPL System on her lower back using the Velcro straps.  For her, I was not very impressed with the Velcro straps for my back.  For the short time (17 minutes) that it is on, I found it easier to lay face-down and position the two panels on my back.  I think that the Velcro system would work better for a knee, elbow, foot, ect…She found there to be little “sensation”.  The unit may have provided a bit of warmth, but not nearly “hot”.  She found pain relief after the second application.  The first 17 minutes may have helped, but not much as she had hoped.   She did find relief when she used the DPL later in the day and the next.  The relief was similar to what one might feel after using a heating pad (relaxation of the muscles), but she thought that it was deeper relief than with what a heating pad would typically do.

Philips Golite Blu

Introduction
In contrast with some of the other light therapy devices on this site, the Philips Golite is advertised as being primarily for use in mood enhancement, in helping to fight the winter blues. It is especially appropriate for people living in the geographic locations that have long winters or for people who work indoors and perhpas do not get an adequate exposure to sunlight. Using the right wavelength of light, you can aid your body in its ability to produce hormones naturally, boosting your mood regardless of where you are or the weather outside.

Reviews
Users love the portable size and the various settings for duration and intensity. People advise that you not use the unit within two ours of bedtime as the hormonal response can prevent you from sleeping. Many customers rave about the units ability to enhance mood and energy levels during the day. Some people complained of the location of the LCD panel (where the controls are) preferring it have the controls on the side or back rather than having to stare at the unit from the front to operate it while it is on. Overall, users seem very happy with how the unit performs and as suble pick me up and home or at the office it can’t be beat.

Philips goLITE BLU Light Therapy Device

Philips HF3318/60 Energylight

Introduction
For those serious about dealing with their propensity for winter blues (SAD-Seasonal Effective Disorder) and don’t care about portability, this light therapy device is one for you. Apparently at one time it cost over $300 but Philips has dropped the price to a very reasonable $186. It is best used as a permanent fixture at your home or office.

Reviews
This unit appears to be the “Rocky” of mood enhancement (or the “Willie Mays’ if you are a baseball fan). As it is not portable unit, users tend to place it in one part of the house or office and leave it there. The most noted complaint was about the price, over $250-300 at one time. For whatever reason, Philips has practically dropped the price in half, making it a great bargain at $186.

NatureBright PER3 Deluxe Light Therapy Lamp

Introduction
This Naturebright unit is another light therapy product that is effective in treating winter blues or SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Applications also include its aid in people with depression, help with sleep disorders and with jet lag. The unit can double as a reading lamp.

Reviews
Most users found the unit effective for improving moods and improving sleep quality. Users liked its adjustablity, its heavy base, the lamps brightness and its use as a reading lamp. Some people complained that the rising sun simulator should be more gradual, as the majority of the increased light intensity happens in the last minute of a 30 minute cycle. People also complained that the clock is not lighted, so you have to turn on the light to be able to read it.
