Vitamin D is essential for the development and maintenance of healthy bones. Early in life, Vitamin D is necessary for bone development and growth. Later in life, Vitamin D is necessary for bone maintenance.
Vitamin D is normally made in our skin or ingested in the foods we eat. In our skin Vitamin D is made by the photoconversion of 7-Dehydrocholesterol (a provitamin) to Previtamin D3 Previtamin D3 undergoes thermal isomerization to Vitamin D3 which is picked up by serum proteins and carried first to the liver where it undergoes a hydroxylation to 25-hydroxy Vitamin D and then 25-Hydroxy Vitamin D is carried to the kidneys where a second hydroxylation occurs which makes the active form of the vitamin 1,25 calciferol.
When we ingest foods containing Vitamin D3, like certain fish oils, or milks or cereals fortified with Vitamin D3, the D3 is transported through the gut and carried by proteins for the necessary hydroxylations by the liver and kidneys(ref.) There are several disturbing reports that some foods purported to contain Vitamin D; in fact, do not.
Vitamin D is stored in the body fat ant the major circulating form of vitamin D, 25 (OH)D has a circulating half life of approximately 2-3 weeks. Both of these in combination can help maintain a person’s vitamin D status in the normal range throughout the winter if they obtain enough vitamin D during the spring, summer and fall from sun exposure. However, it should be appreciated that body fat can sequester vitamin D, and that we and others have shown that obese people are more prone to vitamin D deficiency because of the irreversible sequestration of vitamin D in the body fat. It also should be recognized that you would need to raise your blood levels of 25 (OH)D into the 100-150 nmol/L (40-60 ng/ml) range by the end of the summer in order to store enough vitamin D in your body fat and have enough 25 (OH)D in the circulation to sustain you throughout the winter. Since most children and adults never reach this blood level, it is necessary for them to increase their dietary intake of vitamin D and to take a vitamin D supplement throughout the winter to maintain their 25 (OH)D levels above 75/nmol/L which most experts agree is a healthy preferred level.
It is well documented that increase in sensible sun exposure and or vitamin D intake improves overall health and well being. Exposure to ultraviolet B radiation or increasing intake of Vitamin D maximizes bone health in children; helps prevent osteoporosis in adults; decreases risk of common autoimmune diseases including multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease and type 1 diabetes; reduces risk of serious deadly cancers including cancers of the colon, breast, prostate, ovary, esophagus and others; and decreases risk of cardiovascular heart disease. In addition, it is well documented that exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation was an effective method of treating patients with tuberculosis. Recent revelations have documented that it is necessary to increase blood levels of vitamin D either from solar ultraviolet irradiation, artificial ultraviolet irradiation or increasing vitamin D intake for enhancing the immune system to destroy the bacterium that causes tuberculosis. Thus, sensible exposure to ultraviolet B radiation from sun or lamps is an effective method of maintaining adequate vitamin D levels to sustain health throughout life.
This Sperti lamp is by far the most intense application for artificial sun exposure available on this site. It is advertised as being able to help the body in creating vitamin d (a wonderful feature of our bodies’ skin that many people are unaware of). This lamp is also advertised as being able to suppress our bodies ability to make melatonin during the daytime, thus aiding our ability to sleep at night.
About the Importance of Vitamin D
There are numerous Vitamin D benefits for your skin and overall health. Unfortunately, unlike other vitamins such as vitamin c or vitamin e, vitamin d is often overlooked despite its importance in dealing with skin care problems such as psoriasis.
Vitamin d is a fat-soluble vitamin and a powerful antioxidant and anti-carcinogen. It exists in several forms. Calciferol is the most active form of the vitamin. Once produced or ingested, the liver and kidneys act on the vitamin d to convert it into an active form that the body can use.
Why is vitamin d important for good health?
There are several vitamin d benefits for your body. It is essential for:
the formation of healthy and strong teeth, bones, and nails
the proper absorption of calcium by the body and the regulation of calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood
enhancing the absorption of vitamin a and vitamin c and other important elements
proper neuromuscular function
preventing osteoporosis (because it aids in calcium absorption), depression or schizophrenia, prostate cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer
helping to treat conditions such as diabetes and obesity
possibly preventing the onset of multiple sclerosis
maintaining a healthy immune system
This lamp has many very convenient features. It offers a 5 minute automatic timer which shuts off when the exposure regime is completed. It has an emergency on/off switch that terminates the operation instantly. Most importantly, perhaps, is that it has the backing of renowned researcher Dr Holick who has written several books about vitamin d and highly recommends it.
Users claim that it is the only lamp which enables vitamin d levels to increase in a short amount of time. It is assumed that this individual has been doing blood work that measures his/her vitamin d levels (very easy to do btw). (As to why vitamin D is so important, seem my upcoming ebook about this subject which I am very passionate about).
It is important to remember, that, given the intensity of the exposure that this lamp provides, it is necessary to wear protective goggles.
If you live in a northern climate with limited sun exposure in the winter and are prone to the winter blues this by far the most powerful application of artificial sun exposure to apply to your needs
With the uncertainty of the availability of quality health care and lack of consistent access to mainstream doctors and hospitals continuing to loom in Americas future, it is necessary, when practical, to take care of oneself. Long lines, uncertain payment information, and even quality of care is now suspect as doctors retire to avoid the possible health care changes as a result of Obamacare.
There are health care devices that are available that would baffle
most doctors as to their availability and effectiveness. This is not to take a shot at doctors, who do the best they can given their
circumstances. Who is best to determine your own health care needs but you yourself?. This implies a big IF…that you are trying to be informed, to be reading everything you can and to apply it you your own unique situation. And most importantly, to understand that you are the master of your own fate, the final say as to what you will accept and believe with regards to your own body. That is a big step for a lot of people..realizing that everything you put in your body, with regards to not only food and drink, but every drug imaginable, whether prescription or otherwise. Too many of us, as Americans, accept the doctors word for what decisions should be made with regards to our own health. We pacifly accept his/her decision without regard to things like side effects, long term effects and cost. With or without the (as I write this) looming possibility of Obama care…enough is enough…It is about time that we Americans took our health care “by the horns” and made our own decisions. If I have learned anything over the past 50 plus year of my life, it is that the average “expert” is rarely more intelligent than the average Joe, and God forbid that we should hang our hat on everything he or she says. I can say one thing without regret or doubt, and that is that if you have a doctor/practitioner who show a lack of propensity to work with you, to listen to you and to
“work with you”, it is time to move on. It may come a time when we as citizens will have to depend on black market, out of country, fly by night ways of attaining our proper health care, but as of yet (2012 as I write this) we are far from it. It is true that we have the best health care system in the world…it may not last for long…But when has it ever been an option for those of us that have unbrittled access to the internet and a preponderance of available books and informational resources to rely on the so called “expert” with his/her fancy..pansy degree on the wall to dictate perhaps the most important decisions we can make!!! I don’t have all the answers, believe me!…But if a product says it can help alleviate pain, increase vitamin d levels, use certain equipment that we can by off the internet that the “health care professional” doesn’t profit from, shouldn’t we begin to wonder about ulterior “$” motives….My wife has cancer. I don’t know why or how, as she is a petite Japanese woman who, for most of her life, has eaten better and more nutrionally than her white American husband…but because she is beholden to the “expert” (with the profit motive, don’t forget) the most pivotal decisions that she can make at the most important time of her life are almost taken out of her hands and given to the “experts”. I believe this…that God has given plenty of gifted people the same “vision” that quietly the rest of us have with regards to life, and perhaps it is time that we decided that rather than spending $100 of our money to the doctor to tell us what we already knew, that maybe we’d be better off taking that $100
and spending it on a health care device that we are free to purchase
that, in the long run, we will be better off, not only in the short
run, but when this particular ailment crops up again we have the tools to fight it without the humiliation of the doctor visit…as my wife would say ” Gambade” (Good luck)…and God Bless….
Your body produces vitamin d….uv rays provided by ultraviolet lamps…this collection of artificial lamps have been constructed to produce rays similar to sunlight….it is a well known fact that acquiring vitamin d via sunlight exposure or supplements has a variety of health benefits. Perhaps most importantly during the winter, lack of sun exposure can cause a condition called S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder)
Researchers agree that the lack of sunlight in the fall and winter causes the effects of Winter Blues. Without sunlight, the brain doesn’t produce enough serotonin, which results in the symptoms of Winter Blues.
The NIH has demonstrated that specialized bright light (a large field of 10,000 lux intensity) to be the most effective means of reversing the effects of this winter blues. Light therapy produces serotonin in the brain, and researchers believe low serotonin levels contribute to winter blues. Since this discovery, scientists have successfully used bright light to treat winter blues as well as other mood & energy problems with light therapy.
Light also suppresses the hibernation hormone melatonin. This is important, because melatonin forces us to pull back, conserve and sleep. Melatonin secretion is necessary during the night, but daytime melatonin can be harmful. By suppressing melatonin during the daytime, our activity cycle is extended, and we actually sleep better at night.
There are various categories of light therapy devices that have different applications. The first and most expensive, are the Vitamin D lamps that advertise a spectrum of light that mimicks the sun and actually promotes vitamin d production from the exposed skin. Strict time limitations based on your body skin type are recommended, and eye protection is recommended. This category is best represented by the serti lamp (see table below)
Secondly, there are sunlight desk lamps that actually are used for reading and/or studying. Though they do not mention vitamin d output or effect, they are for the more casual user who’d like a reading lamp that emits some uv rays and thus help with the winter blues. This would be represented by the sunlight desk lamp or the verlix happy lamp.
Thirdly there are the lights that deal directly with winter blues, meant to be used while sitting and reading but not as a reading light. They shine towards you and is described by the manufacturer as “therapy light”, naturally boosting your mood and energy level and to fight winter blues in as little as 15 minutes a day.
Fourth, there are the wake up lights, lights that mimic the rising of the sun that assist you in getting out of bed in the morning
It is important to examine the various types of synthetic light available when choosing the appropriate light therapy device. Most importantly is the difference between red and blue light and their specific application with regards to ailments. The first kind of light to consider is red light. Super Pulsed Infrared Laser Radiation (re light) penetrates 10-13 cm (4-5 inches) deep and has strong stimulating effects on blood circulation, membranes and intracellular metabolism. Using photochemical processes, laser light (red light) inserts bio photons into damaged cells. The cells begin to produce energy (ATP), which improves their function, assists their division, strengthens the body’s immune system, and causes the secretion of various hormones. The tissues are healed, and pain disappears. If damaged cells have died, the bio photons help the division of neighbouring cells, generating new tissues, and thus bring about healing.
Infrared therapy (red light) is a well recognised, medically proven method of pain relief, through heat and warmth applied to a particular area of the body to effectively relieve pain and increase the blood flow to the affected area, to improve oxygenation and energise damaged cells. It has a powerful tonic effect on the central nervous system.
Continuous incoherent infrared radiation (red light) penetrates shallower tissue depth and has an overall broader spectrum as compared to laser radiation. Red light penetrates more shallow tissue depth and has a beneficial anti-inflammatory effect.
Therapeutic red light has anti inflammation and psychotherapeutic effects, as well as pain relief, improved blood circulation, anti-oedema and marked therapeutic effects on joints with the abundant areolar tissue.
The second light to consider is blue light. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that generally occurs each year during fall and winter. A light therapy box that administers blue light is a proven seasonal affective disorder treatment. Light box therapy may be effective on its own. Or, light therapy (blue light) may be most effective when it’s combined with another seasonal affective disorder treatment such as an antidepressant medication or psychological counseling (psychotherapy). Light therapy boxes for seasonal affective disorder treatment are also known as light boxes, bright light therapy boxes and phototherapy boxes.
All light boxes for seasonal affective disorder treatment are designed do the same thing, but one may work better for you than another. So, find out your options before you buy one — and make sure you’re getting the light therapy box that best suits your needs.
